PRODUCT DETAILS
Despite its amazingly light 1.77-lb body, the FS5 is more than tough enough for the rigors of real-world shooting.
A magnesium chassis ensures high rigidity with ¼-inch screw holes on handle, top and bottom of the body to support mounting on a drone, gimbal, or in an underwater housing.
A detachable Smart Grip puts all of the FS5’s key functions at your fingertips and is easily adjusted with the press of a single button.
KEY FEATURES
However you want to shoot, the FS5 adapts to fit your style. A high resolution 0.39-inch OLED viewfinder enables precise manual focus and is perfectly offset for right-eye or left-eye viewing.
A 3.5-inch LCD screen can be attached in no less than nine different locations: three on top of the handle and another six on top of the body. And once attached, the positioning of the screen can be freely adjusted — for example, either beside the camera body or directly along the axis of the lens.
The FS5 is built around a high-sensitivity 4K Super35 Exmor™ CMOS Sensor that offers all the benefits of a large format sensor in combination with the exceptional image readout speeds required for 4K motion-picture shooting and super slow motion.
* RAW output with optional CBKZ-FS5RIF.
Sony’s a mount system offers unsurpassed compatibility with both Sony and third-party lenses. The FS5’s E-Mount can take cinema lenses and SLR lenses with a third-party adapter, as well as Sony’s E-mount and A-mount lenses. So whether buying new lenses, or making use of lenses you’ve already purchased, the FS5 makes it easy.
The FS5 features Sony’s unique built-in electronic variable Neutral Density (ND) filter, further expanding the depth of field capability of its large format sensor. Unlike conventional optical ND Filters, the electronic ND Filter on the FS5 can be controlled from 1/4 ND to 1/128 ND linearly. ND Filters can also be set to auto.* This makes the FS5 ideal for fast-moving shoots in changeable environments — there’s no need to change filters as lighting conditions change, and variable control makes it easy to keep depth of field under control.
*Requires Version 2.0 firmware or above.
Demand for HDR content is increasing and FS5 offers you a choice of two powerful workflows. Whichever option you choose, a phenomenal fourteen stops of exposure latitude ensures the highest fidelity in capturing highlights and details within shadows.
The FS5 offers High Frame Rate (HFR) cache recording at Full HD 10-bit 4:2:2 image quality and a frame rate of up to 240fps. The 8-second cache recording means no more mis-timed shots leading to extra takes. It also lets you pick out footage at exactly the point that you want. It is also possible to record 120fps with up to 16-second cache recording. Higher frame rates of 480fps and 960fps are also possible at specific resolutions. It is also possible to upgrade the FS5 for even greater creative flexibility.
*Paid upgrade. V4 firmware required.
**Paid upgrade. V2 or above firmware required
FS5 offers 9 pre-Programd Picture Profiles, including ones customized for S-Log2, S-Log3, plus a profile tuned to provide vibrant, high contrast visuals for creators who desire a DSLR-style look. Each profile can be individually adjusted to suit your specific requirements and switched between in seconds.
This proprietary Sony technology significantly extends your ability to get closer to a remote scene while preserving image quality. Once you’ve zoomed in at maximum optical magnification, By Pixel Super Resolution technology can enlarge the image by an additional 200% in Full HD. It is also compatible with fixed focal length lenses, so you can zoom into a scene while using a prime lens.
FS5 is all about choices. It’s our most affordable Super 35-mm camcorder, but it’s fully upgradeable. FS RAW in 4K or 2K with an external recorder for future-proof content. Continuous 120fps high frame rate recording in Full HD. MPEG HD422 and MPEG HD420 for broadcast applications. It’s easy to upgrade FS5 to meet almost any requirement. Also available is FS5 II, which has continuous 120fps HFR recording in Full HD and FS RAW output as standard plus features enhanced creative look.
To extend recording time and workflow flexibility, the FS5 is equipped with two SDXC/SDHC card slots. “RELAY” mode automatically switches recording from the first to the second memory card when the first is full, while “SIMUL” mode permits simultaneous recording to two memory cards (for example, to create an immediate back-up version). The FS5’s three start/stop buttons (on the grip, handle, and camcorder body) can independently start and stop recording on different memory cards while recording in “SIMUL” mode.
The FS5 takes advantage of Sony’s flexible Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe, which provides power, signal connections and coordinated on/off switching to compatible Sony accessories. For example, you can connect and control Sony wireless microphone systems such as the UWP-D11 or UWP-D12 or attach the HVL-LBPC light.*
*Accessories sold separately. HVL-LBPC light does not draw power from FS5.
The FS5 has two XLR connectors – so even if you remove the handle with its standard, easy-access XLR connector then a second on the body is still available, making it ideal for applications such as shooting in a confined space, such as a car interior, or when mounting on a gimbal.
Also available is FS5 II which has continuous 120fps HFR recording in Full HD and FS RAW output as standard plus an enhanced creative look.

High performance, proven recording formats
PXW-Z280 offers complete production flexibility with built-in support for a wide variety of production formats.
High-quality XAVC Intra and XAVC Long GOP recordings
XAVC technology is based on the H.264 standard, which provides an exceptionally robust and efficient compression technology. XAVC Intra (frame) compression means that every frame is encoded independent of the other frames – providing a better quality picture, without compromises. XAVC Long GOP applies compression across multiple frames – reducing file sizes, which can make for fast ingest and editing as well as providing budget savings on recording media. The XAVC codec adopts 10-bit sampling for high-definition recording with rich tonal expression.
Broadcast-standard MPEG HD422 and MPEG HD
High-quality MPEG HD422 50 Mbps is fully compliant with the latest EBU recommendations for long-form broadcast production and is widely accepted in broadcasting stations and production houses. This recording capability makes PXW-Z280 ideal for a wide range of different applications, including newsgathering and documentary production.
DVCAM at 25 Mbps in MXF file format
Many broadcasters and production houses still utilize the proven DVCAM format and PXW-Z280 provides support at the flick of a switch.
HDR in HD 120 fps*
Shoot beautiful High Dynamic Range (HDR) content in HD at up to 120 fps (HFR).
*Requires V5 firmware.
To deliver imaging performance previously impossible for a compact camcorder, a large 14.2-megapixel (effective) 1.0-type stacked CMOS image sensor delivers beautiful background bokeh defocus effects and superior sensitivity for capturing high-quality images with less noise, even under dark or bright conditions. This sensor integrates up to 273 phase-detection AF points that densely cover approx. 84% of the image area, for precise tracking of subjects throughout the shooting frame.
The sensor gives you low noise and less blur, because more light reaches the sensor, offering clear and steady pictures even in a dark scene with minimum illumination 1.7 lux.*
*LOW LUX mode.
Enhanced Fast Hybrid auto focus (AF) is comprised of a number of features: Phase-detection AF with up to 273 reference points covering approximately 84% of the image area, face detection and lock-on auto focus technology to estimate subject movement. They all work together seamlessly to capture fast-moving subjects with amazing sharpness.
AF Drive Speed means you set the speed at which focus switches—rapid for a sports event and slow for a drama production. It’s easy to get the results you need. AF Track Depth allows you to choose a Wide depth of field when a subject is fast moving, while Narrow fine tunes performance for a subject at a consistent distance. AF Switching Sensitivity lets you lock tight to a single subject or fluidly switch focus—such as when shooting a line of runners.
